The Hanuman Chalisa meaning (हनुमान चालीसा अर्थ सहित), line by line. Every doha and chaupai of Goswami Tulsidas ji is given as in Gita Press, then its meaning in simple Hindi, then in English. The Hanuman Chalisa has two dohas at the start, forty chaupai (that is why it is called Chalisa, from chalis, forty), and one doha at the end. It is in Awadhi, the language of the Ramcharitmanas, and it was written by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century.

दोहा 1
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु जो दायकु फल चारि॥
अर्थ: श्री गुरु के चरण कमलों की धूल से अपने मन रूपी दर्पण को साफ करके, मैं श्री रघुवर (राम जी) के निर्मल यश का वर्णन करता हूँ, जो चारों फल (धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष) देने वाला है.
Meaning: With the dust of my Guru's lotus feet I clean the mirror of my mind, and then I sing the pure glory of Shri Ram, which gives all four fruits of life: dharma, artha, kama and moksha.
दोहा 2
बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल बुधि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥
अर्थ: अपने को बुद्धिहीन जानकर मैं पवन कुमार (हनुमान जी) का स्मरण करता हूँ. हे प्रभु, मुझे बल, बुद्धि और विद्या दीजिए और मेरे कष्ट और विकार दूर कीजिए.
Meaning: Knowing that I have little wisdom, I remember you, son of the Wind. Give me strength, intelligence and knowledge, and take away my troubles and my faults.
चौपाई 1
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
अर्थ: हे हनुमान जी, आपकी जय हो, आप ज्ञान और गुणों के सागर हैं. हे कपीश, आपकी जय हो, तीनों लोकों में आपका प्रकाश फैला है.
Meaning: Victory to you, Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue. Victory to the lord of the vanaras, whose light fills all three worlds.
चौपाई 2
राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा।
अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
अर्थ: आप श्री राम के दूत हैं, अतुलनीय बल के धाम हैं. आपको अंजनी पुत्र और पवनसुत के नाम से जाना जाता है.
Meaning: You are Ram's messenger, the home of strength beyond compare. You are known as Anjani's son and the son of the Wind.
चौपाई 3
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
अर्थ: आप महावीर हैं, पराक्रमी हैं, आपका शरीर वज्र जैसा है. आप बुरी बुद्धि को दूर करते हैं और अच्छी बुद्धि वालों के साथी हैं.
Meaning: You are the great hero, mighty, with a body strong as a thunderbolt. You remove bad thinking and stand by those with good sense.
चौपाई 4
कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा।
कानन कुंडल कुंचित केसा॥
अर्थ: आपका रंग सोने जैसा है और आप सुंदर वेश में सजे हैं. आपके कानों में कुंडल हैं और बाल घुंघराले हैं.
Meaning: Your colour is golden and you are beautifully dressed, with earrings in your ears and curly hair.
चौपाई 5
हाथ बज्र और ध्वजा बिराजै।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
अर्थ: आपके हाथ में वज्र (गदा) और ध्वजा शोभा देते हैं, और कंधे पर मूंज का जनेऊ सजा है.
Meaning: A thunderbolt mace and a flag shine in your hands, and a sacred thread of munj grass rests on your shoulder.
चौपाई 6
संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन।
तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन॥
अर्थ: आप शंकर जी के अंश और केसरी के पुत्र हैं. आपके तेज और प्रताप की पूरा जगत वंदना करता है.
Meaning: You are a form of Shiva and the son of Kesari. The whole world bows to your radiance and glory.
चौपाई 7
बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
अर्थ: आप विद्यावान, गुणी और बहुत चतुर हैं, और श्री राम का काम करने के लिए हमेशा उत्सुक रहते हैं.
Meaning: You are learned, full of virtue and very wise, and always eager to do Ram's work.
चौपाई 8
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।
राम लषन सीता मन बसिया॥
अर्थ: आप प्रभु राम का चरित्र सुनने के रसिया हैं. राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता जी आपके मन में बसते हैं.
Meaning: You love to hear the story of the Lord. Ram, Lakshman and Sita live in your heart.
चौपाई 9
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
अर्थ: आपने छोटा रूप धरकर सीता जी को दर्शन दिए, और विकट (बड़ा, भयानक) रूप धरकर लंका जलाई.
Meaning: Taking a tiny form you appeared before Sita, and taking a fearsome form you burnt Lanka.
चौपाई 10
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे।
रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥
अर्थ: आपने भीम (विशाल) रूप धरकर राक्षसों का संहार किया और श्री रामचंद्र जी के सारे काम संवारे.
Meaning: Taking a huge form you destroyed the demons and completed every task of Shri Ram.
चौपाई 11
लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये।
श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
अर्थ: आप संजीवनी बूटी लाकर लक्ष्मण जी को जीवित कर लाए. इससे खुश होकर श्री रघुवीर ने आपको गले लगा लिया.
Meaning: You brought the sanjeevani herb and brought Lakshman back to life, and Shri Ram joyfully hugged you to his heart.
चौपाई 12
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
अर्थ: श्री राम ने आपकी बहुत प्रशंसा की और कहा, तुम मुझे भरत के समान प्रिय भाई हो.
Meaning: Ram praised you greatly and said, you are as dear to me as my brother Bharat.
चौपाई 13
सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं।
अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥
अर्थ: हजार मुख वाले शेषनाग भी तुम्हारा यश गाएं, ऐसा कहकर श्रीपति (राम जी) ने आपको गले से लगा लिया.
Meaning: Saying that even the thousand-headed Sheshnag sings your glory, the Lord embraced you.
चौपाई 14
सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥
अर्थ: सनक आदि ऋषि, ब्रह्मा जी और बड़े मुनि, नारद जी, सरस्वती जी और शेषनाग भी आपका गुणगान करते हैं.
Meaning: Sanaka and the sages, Brahma and the great munis, Narad, Sharda (Saraswati) and Sheshnag all sing your praise.
चौपाई 15
जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते।
कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥
अर्थ: यम, कुबेर और सब दिशाओं के रक्षक (दिक्पाल) भी आपका पूरा यश नहीं कह सकते, तो कवि और विद्वान कहाँ से कह पाएंगे.
Meaning: Even Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions cannot fully tell your glory, so how can poets and scholars?
चौपाई 16
तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा।
राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥
अर्थ: आपने सुग्रीव पर उपकार किया, उन्हें श्री राम से मिलाया और राजा का पद दिलवाया.
Meaning: You did Sugriva a great favour: you brought him to Ram and gave him back his kingdom.
चौपाई 17
तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषन माना।
लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना॥
अर्थ: विभीषण ने आपकी सलाह मानी और लंका के राजा बने, यह सारा संसार जानता है.
Meaning: Vibhishan followed your advice and became king of Lanka, as the whole world knows.
चौपाई 18
जुग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानू।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
अर्थ: जो सूर्य हजारों योजन दूर है, उसे आपने मीठा फल समझकर निगल लिया था.
Meaning: The sun, thousands of yojans away, you swallowed thinking it a sweet fruit.
चौपाई 19
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
अर्थ: प्रभु राम की अंगूठी मुँह में रखकर आपने समुद्र लांघ लिया, इसमें कोई आश्चर्य नहीं.
Meaning: Keeping the Lord's ring in your mouth you leapt across the ocean, and there is no wonder in that for you.
चौपाई 20
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
अर्थ: संसार के जितने भी कठिन काम हैं, वे आपकी कृपा से आसान हो जाते हैं.
Meaning: Every hard task in the world becomes easy with your grace.
चौपाई 21
राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
अर्थ: आप श्री राम के द्वार के रखवाले हैं. आपकी आज्ञा के बिना वहाँ कोई प्रवेश नहीं कर सकता.
Meaning: You guard the door of Ram. No one can enter without your permission.
चौपाई 22
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।
तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना॥
अर्थ: जो आपकी शरण में आता है, उसे सब सुख मिलते हैं. आप जिसके रक्षक हैं, उसे किसी का डर नहीं.
Meaning: Whoever takes shelter in you finds every happiness. With you as protector, there is no one to fear.
चौपाई 23
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।
तीनों लोक हाँक तें काँपै॥
अर्थ: अपने तेज को आप ही संभाल सकते हैं. आपकी एक हुंकार से तीनों लोक कांप उठते हैं.
Meaning: Only you can hold your own power. At your roar all three worlds tremble.
चौपाई 24
भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
अर्थ: जहाँ महावीर हनुमान जी का नाम सुनाया जाता है, वहाँ भूत पिशाच पास नहीं आते.
Meaning: Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near where the name of Mahavir is spoken.
चौपाई 25
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा।
जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥
अर्थ: वीर हनुमान जी का लगातार जप करने से रोग नष्ट होते हैं और सब पीड़ा दूर होती है.
Meaning: Chanting the name of brave Hanuman without break destroys disease and takes away all pain.
चौपाई 26
संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
अर्थ: जो मन, कर्म और वचन से हनुमान जी का ध्यान करता है, उसे वे संकट से छुड़ाते हैं.
Meaning: Hanuman frees from trouble whoever keeps him in mind, in thought, deed and word.
चौपाई 27
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
अर्थ: तपस्वी राजा श्री राम सबसे ऊपर हैं, और उनके सारे काम आपने ही पूरे किए.
Meaning: Ram, the king who lived like an ascetic, is above all, and you completed all his work.
चौपाई 28
और मनोरथ जो कोइ लावै।
सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
अर्थ: जो कोई भी मनोकामना लेकर आता है, उसे जीवन का अपार फल मिलता है.
Meaning: Whoever comes with any wish receives the endless fruit of life.
चौपाई 29
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
अर्थ: चारों युगों में आपका प्रताप है, और आपका यश पूरे जगत में प्रकाशित है.
Meaning: Your glory shines in all four ages, and your fame lights up the whole world.
चौपाई 30
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे।
असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥
अर्थ: आप साधु और संतों के रक्षक हैं, राक्षसों का नाश करने वाले और श्री राम के दुलारे हैं.
Meaning: You protect saints and good people, destroy the demons, and are dear to Ram.
चौपाई 31
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
अर्थ: माता जानकी (सीता जी) ने आपको ऐसा वरदान दिया कि आप आठ सिद्धियाँ और नौ निधियाँ दे सकते हैं.
Meaning: Mother Janaki (Sita) gave you the boon that you can grant the eight siddhis and the nine nidhis.
चौपाई 32
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
अर्थ: आपके पास राम नाम की रसायन (औषधि) है, और आप सदा श्री रघुपति के दास बने रहें.
Meaning: You hold the elixir of Ram's name, and you always remain the servant of Raghupati.
चौपाई 33
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै।
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
अर्थ: आपका भजन करने से श्री राम मिलते हैं और जन्म जन्म के दुख भूल जाते हैं.
Meaning: By singing your bhajan one reaches Ram, and the sorrows of many births are forgotten.
चौपाई 34
अंत काल रघुबर पुर जाई।
जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई॥
अर्थ: अंत समय में भक्त श्री राम के धाम जाता है, और जहाँ भी जन्म ले, हरि का भक्त कहलाता है.
Meaning: At the end the devotee goes to Ram's abode, and wherever he is born again he is called a devotee of Hari.
चौपाई 35
और देवता चित्त न धरई।
हनुमत सेइ सर्ब सुख करई॥
अर्थ: किसी और देवता को मन में न भी रखें, तो भी हनुमान जी की सेवा से सब सुख मिलते हैं.
Meaning: Even without holding any other deity in mind, serving Hanuman gives every happiness.
चौपाई 36
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
अर्थ: जो बलवीर हनुमान जी का स्मरण करता है, उसके संकट कट जाते हैं और सब पीड़ा मिट जाती है.
Meaning: Whoever remembers mighty Hanuman, his troubles are cut away and all his pain ends.
चौपाई 37
जै जै जै हनुमान गोसाईं।
कृपा करहु गुरु देव की नाईं॥
अर्थ: हे स्वामी हनुमान जी, आपकी जय हो, जय हो, जय हो. आप गुरु देव की तरह मुझ पर कृपा कीजिए.
Meaning: Victory, victory, victory to you, Lord Hanuman. Bless me as a guru blesses his disciple.
चौपाई 38
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई।
छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥
अर्थ: जो इसका सौ बार पाठ करता है, वह बंधनों से छूट जाता है और उसे महा सुख मिलता है.
Meaning: Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and finds great joy.
चौपाई 39
जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चलीसा।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
अर्थ: जो यह हनुमान चालीसा पढ़ता है, उसे सिद्धि मिलती है, इसके साक्षी स्वयं गौरीपति शिव जी हैं.
Meaning: Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa gains success, and Shiva, the lord of Gauri, is witness to it.
चौपाई 40
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा।
कीजै नाथ हृदय महँ डेरा॥
अर्थ: तुलसीदास सदा श्री हरि के सेवक हैं. हे नाथ, मेरे हृदय में अपना डेरा (निवास) बनाइए.
Meaning: Tulsidas is forever a servant of Hari. O Lord, make your home in my heart.
अंतिम दोहा
पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप।
राम लषन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥
अर्थ: हे पवन पुत्र, आप संकट हरने वाले और मंगल की मूर्ति हैं. हे देवताओं के राजा, आप राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता जी के साथ मेरे हृदय में बसिए.
Meaning: O son of the Wind, remover of trouble, form of all that is good: king among gods, live in my heart along with Ram, Lakshman and Sita.

Shri guru charan saroj raj means: with the dust of my guru's lotus feet I clean the mirror of my mind, and then I sing the pure glory of Shri Ram, which gives the four fruits of life. Tulsidas ji begins by asking for a clean mind before he praises the Lord.
It is a prayer: O son of the Wind, remover of trouble and form of all that is good, please live in my heart together with Ram, Lakshman and Sita. The Chalisa ends by asking Hanuman ji to stay in our heart.
It says the sun is thousands of yojans away, and as a child Hanuman ji swallowed it thinking it was a sweet fruit. Many people like to point out that the distance in this line comes close to the real distance of the sun, but the main point of the chaupai is Hanuman ji's childhood leela.
Hanuman ji is a form (amsh) of Lord Shankar, that is Shiva, and he is the son of Kesari. The whole world bows to his radiance. Gita Press prints it as संकर सुवन, which is the Awadhi spelling of Shankar.
It means whoever recites the Chalisa a hundred times is freed from bondage and finds great joy. Many people do 100 paath as an anushthan. Some read sat as true, meaning one who reads it with a true heart. Both readings are common.
हनुमान चालीसा तुलसीदास जी की 40 चौपाइयाँ हैं जिनमें हनुमान जी के रूप, गुण और रामायण के कामों का वर्णन है, जैसे संजीवनी लाना, समुद्र लांघना और लंका जलाना. अंत में भक्त उनसे संकट हरने और हृदय में बसने की प्रार्थना करता है. ऊपर हर चौपाई का अर्थ सरल हिंदी में दिया है.
