The Hanuman Bahuk (हनुमान बाहुक) is the prayer Goswami Tulsidas wrote in his old age in Kashi, when his arm (bahu) was in terrible pain. In 44 chhand he calls on Hanuman ji, then on Ram ji and Shiv ji, to take the pain away. The text here is as printed by Gita Press, Gorakhpur, with a simple meaning under each chhand.
The story of the Hanuman Bahuk
Tulsidas ji had already given us the Ramcharitmanas and the Hanuman Chalisa when, late in life in Varanasi, a sharp pain started in his arm and boils spread over his body. Medicines, mantras and remedies did not help. So he did what he knew best: he wrote to Hanuman ji. In the first verses he praises him, the one who crossed the sea, burnt Lanka and brought the sanjeevani. Then the tone changes. He asks, almost like a child complaining to his father, why Hanuman ji is late for him alone. By the end he leaves everything to Ram ji and accepts that he is reaping what he sowed.
That honesty is why so many people read the Bahuk when they are in pain. It is a real person's prayer from a hospital bed, not only praise.

Meaning: He crossed the ocean, took away Sita's grief, and glows like the rising sun. His arms are long and his form so fierce he seems death to death itself. He burnt Lanka without fear and broke the pride of the demons. Tulsidas says this son of the Wind is easy to reach through seva, stays close to his devotees, and ends every hard trouble for those who sing of him, bow, remember and chant his name.
Meaning: A body like a golden mountain, the light of countless suns, a broad chest, mighty arms, and nails and frame hard as the thunderbolt. Tawny eyes, fierce brows, brown hair, and a tough tail that breaks the strength of the wicked. Tulsidas says that whoever holds this form in his heart, pain and sin do not come near him even in dreams.
Meaning: Shiva, Kartikeya, Parashuram, gods and demons are all heroes of the battlefield. The Vedas call Hanuman the warrior who keeps his word, famous for his deeds. Ram himself sang his virtues, and his strength dried up the ocean of the world. Who but Tulsi's lord, the son of the Wind, can crush the demon army?
Meaning: Hanuman went to the Sun to study. The Sun, thinking him a child, said he could not stop moving. So Hanuman walked backwards across the sky facing the Sun and studied without a single mistake. Seeing this, Indra, Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma were dazzled. Tulsi says they wondered whether this was strength, courage, patience or daring, or the essence of all of them in one body.

Meaning: In the Mahabharata, sitting on the flag of Arjun's chariot, Hanuman roared and Duryodhan's army shook. Drona and Bhishma said, this is the great hero, the son of the Wind, whose strength is an ocean of valour. As a child, the leap from earth to the sun was less than a single step for him. Warriors bow their heads and fold their hands, and seeing him makes their life worthwhile.
Meaning: Making the ocean as small as a cow's hoofprint, he set Lanka ablaze like a Holi fire and threw the enemy city into panic. He plucked up the mighty Dronagiri mountain like a ball in play. The great crisis that came upon Ram's work was solved in a moment. The arms of Tulsi's lord became the place where the guardians of the world were settled again.
Meaning: The marks of his feet on the back of the great tortoise are like vessels for measuring the ocean. That ocean became a fort for fleeing demons and a home for great fish. Tulsi says his glory was a raging fire for the fuel of Ravan, Kumbhakarn and Meghnad. Bhishma says, in my view no one as mighty as Hanuman has ever been, in any age or any world.
Meaning: You are King Ram's messenger, the worthy son of the Wind, and Anjani's beloved, shining like countless suns. You end Sita's sorrow, destroy sin and fault, protect all who come to you, and are dear to Lakshman as life itself. You appeared to destroy the Ravan of Tulsi's hard poverty. O people, keep such a wise, virtuous, mighty and ever watchful master as Hanuman in your heart.

Meaning: Your strength in destroying the demon army is known everywhere, and the Vedas sing that you freed the gods from prison. You are the morning sun that melts the frost of sin and pain and makes the lotus of the devotee bloom. Tulsi's heart trusts you alone, so he has no worry about this world or the next. The name of Kesari's son, Ram's beloved and a form of Shiva, is a wish-granting tree in this Kali age.
Meaning: You are the limit of strength, huge and heroic, chosen by Ram himself. Your body is like the thunderbolt and your roar shakes the battlefield, yet your mind is full of compassion and rooted in dharma. You are death to the wicked and protector of the good. Remembered, you take away Tulsi's pain. You bring joy to Sita, are dear to Ram, and help all who serve.
Meaning: You are like Brahma in creating, Vishnu in protecting, Shiva in destroying, and nectar in giving life. You are like the earth in holding, the sun in ending darkness, fire in drying and the moon in nourishing. You punish the wicked, satisfy the devotee and end the shame of having to beg. Tulsi's lord Hanuman has firmly resolved to remove the suffering of the suffering in all three worlds.

Meaning: Knowing your service, even Ram feels in your debt, Shiva stays on your side and Indra bows. Gods, goddesses and demons fold their hands, so what of a poor king or a beggar? Waking, sleeping, sitting or walking, whoever trusts in Hanuman's call in his heart, who has the power to harm him? Every day and everywhere things go well for him.

Meaning: Whoever has Hanuman's call ringing in his heart is blessed by Shiva with his attendants and Parvati, by all the guardians of the world, and by Ram, Lakshman and Sita. Tulsi asks, when someone is free of worry in this world and the next, why would he need any other hero? Everyone favours the devotee of Kesari's son, and sages and siddhas care for him like a child.
14
Meaning: You are a treasure of compassion, of strength and wisdom, of joy and glory, of virtue and knowledge. You are a form of Shiva and dear to Ram, and taking your name gives artha, dharma, kama and moksha. You know Ram's nature, the ways of the world and the rules of the Vedas. In mind, word and deed Tulsi is yours, and you are the wise master who knows everything within.

Meaning: O lord of vanaras, what even the mind found hard you made easy with your body, and you set out everything for Ram's work. Freer of the gods, roaring in battle, Kesari's son, your fame has shone through every age. O mighty hero, why has your strength grown less for Tulsi, so that the good feel shy and the wicked rejoice? O son of Anjani, set right my spoiled affairs, just as your grace has always set them right.

Meaning: O Hanuman, you are the jewel among the wise and live always in your devotees' hearts. Whom have I harmed? I am yours, so why are you displeased? You have set me aside as your servant, and Tulsi can do nothing about it. My heart has given up, but please tell me my fault so that I can be careful from now on.

Meaning: What you have set up even Shiva cannot pull down, and who can rebuild what you have destroyed? O friend of the poor, those you bless sit like thorns in their enemies' hearts. Tulsi says that at the mention of your name every trouble and worry tears like a spider's web. Have you grown old just when it is my turn, or are you tired from looking after so many poor people?
Meaning: You crossed the ocean, killed mighty demons and burnt Lanka, that strong fort. O lion of battle, you crushed the demons, who were like proud young elephants. Serving a master as able as you, must Tulsi still bear the fire of pain and fault? O hawk among vanaras, the wicked have multiplied like birds, so why not catch them like quail?
19
Meaning: O slayer of Akshay Kumar, you laid waste the Ashok grove and did not even look at Ravan's might. For elephants like Meghnad, Akampan and Kumbhakarn you are a young lion. Ram's glory is the fire for the straw heap of the enemy, and you are its wind. That son of the Wind always protects Tulsi from sin, from curses and from all three kinds of suffering.

Meaning: O Hanuman, I offer myself to you, do not forget your word. The whole world knows that one you favour stays happy. What mistake has Tulsi made in serving you? Uphold your honour as master. If I am at fault, punish me in a thousand ways, but do not give poison to one who would die of a sweet. O beloved of the Wind and of Ram, remove the pain in my arm quickly.
Meaning: O friend of the humble, you made me your own from childhood and showed me pure kindness. Think, Tulsi is your servant; he trusts only you, relies on your strength and hopes only in you. Whom has this fierce Kali age not troubled? See its foot on my head too and remove it. O son of Kesari, roaring hero, strike down the pain in my arm as you struck down Simhika, Rahu's mother.
Meaning: O son of Kesari, you settle those who were uprooted and uproot the proud, remember that strength of yours. O messenger of Ram, you are the wish-granting tree for his servants and the only support for the weak like me. With so able a master over him, Tulsi is being bound and beaten without fault. My arm is like a great pond and this pain is a crocodile in it, seize it and tear open its jaws.
Meaning: I have love for Ram, devotion to Ram, and courage through the grace of Ram, Lakshman and Sita, so take away my grief and trouble. The monkey of my joy has lost heart looking at this ocean of disease, and my soul, like Jambavan, sits trusting only you. O kind one, leap from the mountain of Tulsi's love. O bold hero, why not kill this pain in my arm with one kick, as you did Lankini?

Meaning: Looking through this world, the next and all three worlds, no one as able as you can be seen. Karma, time, the world's guardians and all living beings are in your hands, remember your own greatness. Tulsi is your own servant and you live in his heart, yet he looks deeply unhappy. This arm pain, growing from the root of a vata illness, is like an itching creeper; pull it out as easily as play.

Meaning: Relying on cruel King Kamsa, who is karma, this Putana-like demoness fears no one. She is a terrible killer of children and will trick little ones with her strength. She has come in a lovely disguise, think for yourself: if she falls into the hands of a capable one, everyone's sin will end. O great hero, the pain in Tulsi's arm is Putana and you are child Krishna; only you can kill her.

Meaning: Is this hard pain written on my forehead, a turn of time, anger, an imbalance of the three doshas, the fruit of my sins, or the shadow of deceit? Is it the work of spells or herbs? O dirty, sinful one, run away, or I tell you openly that you will be punished. Know the nature of the lord of vanaras and do not be foolish. I swear by mighty Hanuman, this arm pain cannot stay.
Meaning: You broke Simhika's strength, saw through Sursa's trick, struck down Lankini and laid waste the Ashok grove. You burnt Lanka, tore the crocodile apart and reduced the demons to dust. Tearing through death's curtain, you brought out Mandodari, Ravan's queen and Meghnad's mother. O great hero, why have you left the fear of my arm pain alone? Whose feelings are you sparing? Tulsi is deeply worried.

Meaning: O hero, even the brave tremble hearing of your childhood play, and Indra, the Sun and Rahu forget themselves. All the world's guardians live without worry under your arms, and at your name no one's sorrow remains. Every method and the Vedas prove that the topknot of both thief and banker is in the vanara lord's hand. That this pain stayed in Tulsi's arm so long, is it your laziness, your anger, a joke or a lesson?

Meaning: I was a poor wanderer going house to house for scraps, and you called me and raised me like a child. O hero, son of Anjani, it was you who looked after me, and I trust that you will not forget your own. O king of vanaras, tell me truly, who in the three worlds is as able as you today? Yet it hurts that your servant suffers while you watch, like a little bird dying in a children's game.
30
Meaning: Whether from my own sins, the three kinds of suffering or a curse, the arm pain has grown beyond words and beyond bearing. I tried many medicines, charms, mantras and remedies and prayed to the gods; all were useless and the pain keeps growing. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, karma, time and the whole world obey your command. O Ram's messenger, Tulsi is your servant and you called him yours; O hero, your delay hurts me more than the pain.

Meaning: You are King Ram's messenger, the Wind's good son, strong of hand and foot, and the help of the helpless. The Vedas sing your famous deeds, and a warrior like Ravan was wounded by one blow of your fist. Though such a great master has blessed him, your servant suffers in body, mind and speech. Tulsi feels deep shame over this small arm pain: through what sin of mine or what anger of yours has your power gone hidden?
32
Meaning: Goddesses, gods, demons, humans, sages, siddhas, nagas and every creature great or small, and Putana, witches and demons too, all take the command of Ram's messenger on their heads. Fearful spells, deceit and evil diseases leave their place when they hear Hanuman's name sworn. Be angry with my bad karma, teach Tulsi what is right, and correct the faults that are giving pain.
33
Meaning: By your strength the vanaras won the war against Ravan, and the demons you struck were scattered house by house. By your strength Ram completed all the work of the gods and his whole court was set up. Hearing your praise the gods thrill, and tears fill the eyes of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. O lord of vanaras, place your hand on Tulsi's head; the servants of one who keeps his honour like you are never seen in sorrow.
34
Meaning: I was raised on your scraps, so do not stay silent even if I err. I am worthless, but look at your own nature. O simple-hearted one, in your innocence you get upset over small faults; be pleased, look after me and settle me, do not cast me away. You are the water and I the fish, you the mother and I the little child; do not delay, you are my only support. Seeing the child restless and knowing his love, pass your long tail over Tulsi's arm.
Meaning: Disease, bad influences and bad people have surrounded me like thick clouds rushing in by day. Raining pain, they have scorched the plant of my good name without any fault of mine. O treasure of mercy, mighty Hanuman, look with a smile, give a shout and blow their army away with one breath. O hero, Kesari's son, the demon of disease had swallowed Tulsi, and you have saved me by force.
Meaning: O Hanuman, you are Ram's servant, the best of masters, and always on your devotees' side. The two letters of Ram's name raised me like father and mother and are the root of all joy and blessing. O protector of arms, I have forgotten all joy and cry out in pain from this arm. O hero of Raghu's line, take away the pain, and let me lie at your court even if weak and crippled.

Meaning: Who knows whether this is the terror of time, the hardness of karma, the effect of sin or the madness of vata. Day and night the pain is fierce and unbearable, and it grips the very arm the son of the Wind once held. The tree of Tulsi was planted by you; it has wilted in the fire of the three sufferings, so water it with your grace. O merciful Ram, you know the ways of spirits, of your own and of strangers, of everyone.

Meaning: My feet, stomach, arm and mouth all ache, and my whole body is worn out with pain. Gods, spirits, ancestors, karma, the wicked, time and the planets have all joined to shower cannon fire on me. Since childhood I have been sold to you without price and have written the support of Ram's name on my forehead. O King Ram, has it ever happened that a servant of sage Agastya drowned in a cow's hoofprint of water?
39
Meaning: The arm pain is wicked Subahu, the weakness of my body Maricha, and the pain in my mouth Tadaka, all joined with demon-like diseases. I wish to perform with love the yagya of chanting Ram's name; how can I handle these ghosts who are like messengers of death? The two letters of Ram's name, famous through the world, will help me when remembered. O Tulsi, remember the great warrior who killed Tadaka; he will pierce them with arrows like banyan fruit.
40
Meaning: As a child, with a simple heart, I turned to Ram, chanting his name and living on begged scraps. Then, caught in worldly ways, I unknowingly broke my pure love for Ram's feet. Even while I was doing bad things, Anjani's son took me in and had me set right by Ram's own pure hands. Tulsi became a respected gosain and forgot his bad old days, and today he is reaping the fruit of that.
41
Meaning: Without food or clothes, sunk in grief, weak and wretched, who did not pity me? Ram, the ocean of mercy, gave this orphan Tulsi a master and, by his nature, a good reward. Meanwhile this low one swelled with pride on getting respect and gave up Ram's bhajan in body, mind and speech. That is why Ram's salt seems to be bursting out of my body in the form of terrible boils.
42
Meaning: Let me live in the world called the servant of Ram, the life of Janaki, and for dying there is Kashi and the Ganga. In such a place Tulsi has a sweet in each hand, and not even children will worry whether he lives or dies. People call me Ram's servant, true or false, and I too take pride that apart from Ram I belong to neither Shiva nor Vishnu. This heavy pain has broken my body; who but Raghuvir can take it away?
43
Meaning: O Hanuman, Sita's lord is always your helper and Shiva is like a guru giving good advice. In mind, word and deed I take refuge at your feet, and trusting you I did not treat even the gods as my gods. Remove the pain caused by disease, spirits or some wicked one, and give peace to Tulsi knowing him your true servant. O lord of vanaras, Raghunath, Bholenath and Bhootnath, why not shrink this ocean of disease to a cow's hoofprint?
44
Meaning: I speak to Hanuman, to wise King Ram and to merciful Shankar: please listen carefully. The Creator has made the whole world full of joy and sorrow, attachment and anger, virtue and fault. The Vedas say Ram moves maya, the soul, time, karma and nature, and I hold this as true in my heart. I pray, explain to me what there is that you cannot do. Then I too will stay quiet, knowing I am reaping what I sowed.

How to do the Hanuman Bahuk path
Take a bath and sit before Hanuman ji's picture or murti. Light a diya.
Many people keep a copper lota of water in front of them during the paath.
Start with Ram ji's name, then read all 44 chhand slowly. It takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
After the paath, drink a little of the water as prasad, or give it to the person who is unwell.
Do this daily. Many people take a sankalp of 21 or 40 days, often starting on a Tuesday.
One thing I will say clearly. The Bahuk is a prayer, not a medicine. Please keep the doctor's treatment going. Tulsidas ji himself tried medicines first. The paath gives courage and a calm mind, and that helps you get through the illness.
Questions people ask
What is the Hanuman Bahuk?
It is a stotra of 44 chhand by Goswami Tulsidas, a prayer to Hanuman ji to remove pain. Bahu means arm. In his old age in Kashi, Tulsidas ji had severe pain in his arm and boils on his body, and he wrote these verses asking Hanuman ji, then Ram ji and Shiv ji, to take the pain away.
Doctor ki dawa chalne dijiye, aur saath mein shraddha se paath kijiye, man ko himmat aur shaanti milti hai.
How to do the Hanuman Bahuk path?
Sit before Hanuman ji with a diya, take a little water in a copper lota if you like, and read all 44 chhand slowly with dhyan. Many people do it daily for 21 or 40 days, often on Tuesday to begin. Some keep the water before them during the paath and drink it afterwards as prasad. The whole paath takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
How many chhand are there in the Hanuman Bahuk?
There are 44 chhand: 2 chhappay, 1 jhoolna, 34 ghanakshari and 7 savaiya. They are in the Braj and Awadhi bhasha that Tulsidas ji used.
Is the Hanuman Bahuk the same as the Hanuman Chalisa?
No. Both are by Tulsidas ji, but the Chalisa is 40 chaupai in praise of Hanuman ji, read daily by most families. The Bahuk is a longer, more personal prayer, written by Tulsidas ji in his own pain, and it is read mainly for relief from physical suffering.
I have read the Hanuman Bahuk here from the Gita Press, Gorakhpur book Hanumanbahuk (no. 112), verse by verse. One half-line of chhand 5 was missing in my copy, and I took it from the Gita Press edition with tika by Mahavir Prasad Malaviya Vaidya. The meanings are my own short summaries in simple words, not the Gita Press bhavarth. For a full tika, please buy the Gita Press book, it costs very little.
